As the curtain drew to a close on the golden era of 1970s Eritrean vinyl releases, this record emerged as one of its final masterpieces - featuring the unmistakable touch of Asghedom Woldemichael on guitar and arrangement.

Kicking off the festive season with the timeless voice of the late Esaias Tewolde-Berhan.

Record: Du strålande Betlehemsstjärna (1989)

Bio:

Esaias Tewolde-Berhan, a renowned tenor originally from Eritrea, was celebrated as a leading figure in the lyric-dramatic repertoire. At the age of 19, he received a scholarship from Sweden, enabling him to pursue music studies abroad. He debuted as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore and went on to perform iconic roles such as Don José in Carmen, Hoffmann in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Faust, and Leicester in Maria Stuarda. His career flourished with engagements at prestigious opera houses, including Göteborgsoperan and Kungliga Operan, where he became a leading tenor.

In addition to opera, Esaias excelled in operetta, performing roles like Rosillon in Die lustige Witwe. He also appeared in Animalen by Tage Danielsson and Lars Johan Werle. His talent was widely recognized in concerts, television performances, and recordings, where his powerful voice and emotive expression captivated audiences.

Though Esaias built a distinguished career abroad, he maintained a lifelong connection to Eritrea, where his journey began. He passed away in 2016 at the age of 73, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable artistry and dedication to his craft.

Earlier this year, we had the privilege of collaborating with Frankfurt-based @amanet.e.v for a special listening session dedicated to vintage Eritrean vinyl records. The event brought together local Eritrean community members across generations, sparking heartfelt memories and conversations inspired by the music. The session ran two hours beyond schedule, a true reflection of the meaningful connections and energy in the room.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us that day and made this event unforgettable, and a special thanks to Amanet and the volunteers whose support made everything possible!
